No More Middlemen: How The Hosteller is Rewriting Its Distribution Playbook
by
HyperGuest

India's backpacker scene has always had a spontaneous and community-driven energy. The Hosteller has built its brand on exactly that spirit. Founded in 2014, it is today India's largest self-operated, technology-driven chain of backpacker hostels with 68 properties in over 50 different, and a community-living model that has turned beds into belonging for a generation of young Indian travellers.

As The Hosteller scales at speed, keeping distribution lean, direct, and margin-healthy is no longer a nice-to-have. We interviewed Nijo T M, Head of Reservations, to hear how they're thinking about growth, friction, and what made HyperGuest the right partner for their next chapter.

The Vision

As you continue to expand your footprint, what is your primary focus?

"Our primary focus is to continue building meaningful travel experiences while maintaining the essence of community that defines The Hosteller. The goal is not just to increase our footprint, but to ensure that every property delivers consistent hospitality, strong guest engagement, and a sense of belonging for travellers. We are equally focused on sustainable growth — strengthening operations, enhancing customer experience through technology, and creating value-driven offerings such as memberships, workations, and experiential travel. The vision is to make The Hosteller not just a place to stay, but a preferred travel ecosystem for modern travellers across India."

The Challenge

The backpacker and youth travel segment is moving toward mobile-first, instant bookings. What is the primary digital friction point you face?

"The primary friction point is reducing decision-making time during the booking journey while maintaining trust and clarity for the guest. Today's backpackers expect instant answers, seamless mobile experiences, transparent pricing, and quick payment options without unnecessary steps. Our focus is to remove these friction points through stronger automation, smarter chatbot support, better booking flow optimisation, AI-led personalisation, and ensuring smoother distribution across all D2C channels. The goal is simple: make the guest journey faster, clearer, and more trustworthy so that the path from discovery to confirmed booking feels effortless."

The Partnership

With your ambitious growth plans across India, why was HyperGuest's direct-to-buyer model your strategic choice?

"HyperGuest's direct-to-buyer model stood out because it reduces dependency on traditional layers of distribution and allows us to connect more directly with the right demand partners. This creates better pricing control, faster onboarding of partners, improved inventory distribution, and stronger revenue optimisation without unnecessary commission leakages. For a fast-growing brand like The Hosteller, the ability to move quickly, maintain rate integrity, and create stronger B2B demand channels is extremely valuable. The model supports both scalability and operational efficiency, which aligns well with our long-term growth strategy."

As The Hosteller continues to grow hostel by hostel, city by city, the focus is clear: build a distribution engine as agile as the travellers it serves. Fewer intermediaries, more control, and a guest experience that starts well before check-in.

We're proud to be part of that journey.
